The same room. A different feeling.

A beautiful kitchen does not need to shine to feel luxurious. Matte laminates can give cabinet fronts a quiet, composed look; glossy laminates bring reflections and a more polished presence. Both can work beautifully when the colour, lighting and detailing belong together.

Start with the room you actually live in. Where does the daylight fall? Which shutters will you touch most often? Do you enjoy a crisp reflective finish, or would you rather let the furniture blend into the background?

This comparison is about surface finish, not a promise that one whole category is stronger or more expensive. Choose the look first, then check the exact product, its intended use and the installed quote.

  • MatteSoft light. Understated character.
  • GlossyClear reflections. Polished presence.

Matte: let the room breathe

Picture a kitchen in warm greige, with simple cabinet lines, a pale worktop and brushed metal handles. A matte finish keeps the fronts visually quiet, leaving room for the texture of the flooring, the shape of a pendant and the colours you have chosen.

For a wardrobe, the same approach can create a calmer backdrop to the bed. Take the colour across a generous area instead of judging it only from a tiny swatch. A shade that feels subtle in your hand can look much stronger across a whole wall of storage.

Look closely before you commit. Matte describes the sheen, not every performance feature. If fingerprints worry you, ask whether the specific product is an anti-fingerprint range and request its care instructions. Greenlam, for example, identifies its AFX collection separately as an anti-fingerprint, ultra-matt surface; that claim should not be applied to every matte laminate.

Glossy: give light a place to play

Imagine the same cabinet layout in a softly reflective ivory finish. Gloss can pick up the window, the pendant lights and the movement of the room, creating a sharper, more polished impression. Keep the surrounding palette simple so those reflections feel intentional.

A smaller kitchen can be a good place to try this idea, but gloss will not replace good lighting or fix a cramped layout. Look at a sample from where you would actually stand. A bright window reflected straight into your eyes can be distracting even when the colour is exactly right.

For a wardrobe, check what the doors will reflect from the bed and the doorway. Dark glossy colours can look dramatic, but marks may be more noticeable. If you love that look, make the cleaning routine part of your decision rather than a surprise after installation.

Before choosing, try the same-light test

1. Start with a fair pair. Ask for matte and glossy samples in similar colours. Otherwise you may be choosing between beige and charcoal rather than noticing the finish.

2. Stand them upright. Cabinet shutters are usually vertical. Hold samples at roughly the height and angle of the finished doors, beside your chosen worktop or flooring.

3. Change the light. Look once in daylight and again under the lights you use in the evening. Move a little to each side and notice reflections, colour shifts and any glare.

4. Ask for a cleaning demonstration. With the supplier’s permission, check how ordinary finger marks respond to the recommended cleaner. Do not scratch or stain a display sample to test it.

5. Record the decision. Keep the brand, design code, finish name and approved sample together. A photograph is useful for remembering the scheme, but it is not a reliable colour standard.

Price the cabinet, not just the shine

There is no dependable rule that glossy always costs more than matte, or that a higher price means a better fit for your room. Compare two clearly specified products on the same basis before comparing their totals.

Ask for the sheet dimensions and thickness, the supporting board, adhesive, edge treatment and installation. For perspective, Formica lists its Fineline laminate at 1.0 mm thick, supplied in a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet. That is one product example, not the specification of every laminate in this comparison.

Keep the cabinet dimensions and hardware the same in both quotes. A change in hinges, drawer systems or internal fittings can easily hide the difference you are trying to understand. Ask separately about the reverse face and exposed edges, which also need a considered finish.

If live category prices appear above, use them to explore the catalogue. They may cover different sizes and constructions; they are not an installed quote for your kitchen or wardrobe.

A finish you can enjoy living with

For everyday laminate care, begin with the instructions for the exact product. Formica’s general guidance is to clean with a damp, non-abrasive cloth and mild cleaner, wipe with clean water, then dry. Keep excess water away from seams and edges.

A reflective surface can reveal wiping streaks, so a clean finishing cloth matters. A textured surface may need more attention where dirt collects. Neither finish benefits from harsh scrubbing: avoid abrasive pads and scouring powders unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs otherwise.

Ask which cleaner is suitable before treating a stubborn mark. Do not assume a polish, solvent or cleaning trick used on another cabinet is safe for this one. Good-looking surfaces are easier to live with when the care routine is clear from the start.

Questions people ask us

Can matte and glossy finishes work in the same kitchen?

Yes. One approach is matte on the larger run of cabinets and gloss on a smaller feature area. Keep the colours, edge details and hardware connected, and view both samples together before ordering.

Is every matte laminate anti-fingerprint?

No. A low-sheen appearance is not the same as an anti-fingerprint specification. Ask for the exact range and its technical or care information rather than relying on the word matte.

Is glossy laminate more durable than matte?

Sheen alone does not establish durability. Compare the manufacturer’s specification for the exact products, including their intended application. Good bonding, suitable boards and properly finished edges also matter.

Can I choose the finish from a website photo?

Use photos to shortlist a look, then approve a physical sample. Lighting, editing and screens can change how colour and sheen appear. Check the sample upright in the room and record its design code before ordering.

How can I reduce distracting reflections near a window?

Hold the shortlisted samples at the angle of the finished doors and view them from the places you normally sit or stand. Compare daylight and evening lighting before choosing; the exact finish, colour and room layout all affect the reflections you see.

Find a finish worth coming home to
