Choose the kitchen you want to live with
Acrylic is worth considering when a crisp, reflective finish is central to your kitchen. Decorative laminate is a strong starting point when you want a wider mix of wood looks, solid colours and textures. Neither label tells you everything about the finished cabinet. The board, adhesive, edge treatment and workmanship still need their own place in the conversation.
Start with the part you actually touch: the shutter. Ask to see a finished door, including its back and edges, rather than choosing only from a small colour chip. Open it, look along the surface and inspect the join beside the handle. These details are much easier to judge before an entire kitchen has been ordered.
People also use the word acrylic loosely. Confirm whether the quotation describes an acrylic sheet bonded to a board, a finished panel or a different glossy surface. Likewise, a glossy laminate is not automatically acrylic. Write the manufacturer, range, decor code and construction on the quotation so that everyone is agreeing to the same product.
If you are still deciding how much reflection you like, our matte vs glossy comparison helps separate the appearance question from the material question.

Look beyond the shine
Bring the finish into your room. Hold the shortlisted surfaces upright beside the wall and countertop colours. Look in daylight and under the lights you will use while cooking. A finish that looks quiet in a showroom can catch a bright window or pendant light at home. Dark and pale colours will also change the way those reflections read.
For a uniform, glossy kitchen, compare an acrylic option with a glossy decorative laminate in a similar colour. For a softer scheme, compare the acrylic against a matte solid or a restrained wood look. Changing both colour and finish at once makes it difficult to tell what you actually prefer.
Merino's Acrolam product information describes an ultra-gloss acrylic range for cabinets and lists matching ABS edge bands and 1 mm balancing sheets. Those are product-specific details, not promises that every acrylic product has the same accessories. Ask which edge and reverse-face specification belongs to your chosen range. See the manufacturer's Acrolam information.
Ask about the whole shutter. The decorative face does not replace the supporting board. Have the fabricator state the board specification, finished thickness, reverse finish and treatment of exposed edges. Around the sink and appliances, ask how the design will deal with water, steam and heat according to the relevant product instructions. A good-looking surface cannot correct an unsuitable construction detail.
You do not have to use one finish everywhere. A restrained combination might place a wood look on a tall unit and a solid colour on the main doors. Keep the palette small, and ask for a drawing that shows exactly where each code will be installed.
For decorative laminate, Greenlam publishes technical documents for separate product grades. Use the Greenlam technical library to request the sheet that matches the proposed product, rather than comparing an acrylic brochure with an unspecified laminate.
Compare the quote, then make the choice
Request two quotations against the same cabinet drawing. Keep the hardware, board, dimensions and installation scope unchanged, and ask the supplier to identify only the finish-related differences. Comparing a sheet price with a complete shutter price will not tell you what the upgrade really costs.
Check whether the quote includes matching edges, the back of the shutter, fabrication, transport, installation and applicable taxes. Ask how damage discovered on delivery will be recorded and who handles a later replacement. Confirm the current availability of the exact decor code before the cutting schedule is agreed.
Cleaning also deserves a practical question: what should you use on this exact surface? Keep the written care instructions with the invoice. Do not transfer advice about polishing one acrylic product to every glossy panel, and do not assume a scratch can be buffed out. A repair method should come from the manufacturer or fabricator who knows the surface.
Choose acrylic if you prefer the particular glossy finish in front of you and are comfortable with its complete installed specification and price. Choose decorative laminate if its design range, finish and quoted construction suit the room better. If both look good, let the finished-door sample, documented specification and support after purchase settle the decision.

Questions people ask us
Is acrylic always better than laminate for a kitchen?
No. Compare specific products and finished shutters. The appearance, board, edges, fabrication, care instructions and complete installed price all matter.
Are acrylic and glossy laminate the same thing?
No. A glossy appearance does not identify the material. Ask for the manufacturer and range, and check what the supplier means by acrylic in the quotation.
Does a water-resistant face make the cabinet waterproof?
Do not assume it does. Ask the fabricator about the supporting board, joints, edges and installation around sinks and appliances.
Can I combine acrylic and wood-look laminate?
Yes, as a design choice. Keep the colour palette controlled and confirm which surface and edge detail will be used on each cabinet.
What should I take when comparing kitchen finishes?
Bring the cabinet drawing, countertop and wall references, and your shortlisted product codes. Ask to inspect a finished shutter and obtain an itemised quote.
